'Their brands have only got stronger with these collaborations. I have not heard of one example of it deteriorating a brand's image.'
'Vera Wang was the first designer to do it in apparel,' Ms Defusco said, referring to the bridal wear designer's deal with Kohl's.
'It has done nothing but explode her high end business because more consumers are aware of Kim Kardashian Dresses Sale.'
It seems our straw poll commentators are in the minority. But would high-end customers be happy knowing that their previously rarefied look is being imitated by many thousands of Target shoppers?
'The people who buy high end are not affected by what's happening in Kohl's. They will keep buying high end.
'Consumer awareness is huge. People who didn't previously know a brand now wear that brand. To these people it's the same,' said Ms Defusco.
She says that part of the desire for the lesser quality masstige (mass prestige) threads is that they can be mixed, making high-end style more affordable.
'In these times we want quality and value. We still want labels.'
With the economy in its current state, the appeal of an affordable, feel-good factor impulse buy is perhaps more valuable than ever.
For the brands themselves, though, Ms Defusco says 'it's all about awareness and access.'
Take Isaac Mizrahi, she says. 'All his collaborations have done is made him a very rich man and made him who he is. Everyone knew Kim Kardashian Strapless Dress.'
'Collaborations are here to stay. They won't go away in our lifetime'
As for reaching a saturation point, she says the market is anywhere but nearing that stage. We are hungry, it seems, for more and more.
'Collaborations have huge potential. The consumer today is driven by brands and celebrity.'
But in particular, Ms Defusco says, non-apparel has great potential.
Target's success with Missoni – which saw retail scalpers channel over 30,000 items onto eBay within hours of its launch – she says 'will only give [retailers] the idea to exploit homeware further.'
The reputation and tradition of high quality of labels is enough to carry them through any potential 'banal' downsides of Kardashian Style Dress For Sale Black Blue, while the healthy boost to profits is worth its weight in gold.
