Many pregnant moms wonder if it is safe to color or highlight their hair during pregnancy, as they are worried about the effect that the chemicals could have on their growing baby. In fact, many pregnant celebrities have recently dyed their hair, including Kourtney Kardashian and Snooki, and have spoken out on this beauty treatment. Molly Sims (pictured) has been spotted leaving the Byron Tracey salon in Beverly Hills with perfect blond highlights. So, is it safe?
"I did research about doing anything to the color of my hair while pregnant and followed all of the guidelines from my doctor and took the proper precautions necessary," Kourtney Kardashian wrote on her blog, revealing her new lighter highlights. "I also used products that did not contain ammonia. It is also recommended to be in a well-ventilated area as well as being at least in your second trimester, and I followed both of those rules."

Snooki, who is pregnant with her first child, showed of her new ombre hair and blond extensions on twitter. "The blonde is extensions and he used ammonia free lighter & organic color to make it dark again. All safe [for] us preggers girls!" she wrote on twitter.
We know what the celebs think, but what do the experts say? The American Pregnancy Association talks about the safety of hair treatments during pregnancy on their website.
"Hair dyes are probably safe to use during pregnancy because so little dye is absorbed through the skin. However, it is still important to be cautious, therefore many health care providers recommend that pregnant women not use permanent hair dyes during the first three months. Semi-permanent dyes or a highlighting process may be considered safer for pregnant women. With highlights, the dye is enclosed in foil and won't be absorbed into the skin. Vegetable dyes such as henna are also considered likely to be safe for coloring hair during pregnancy."
